Makarska

Makarska

Makarska is a picturesque town of impressive beauty which lives off tourism and for tourism; a town of youth, culture, sports and entertainment. It was built around a natural port protected by the charming peninsula of Saint Peter and cape Osejava, and it is the biggest and only such port between the Cetina and Neretva estuaries. The town’s history is best discovered in the Franciscan Monastery as well as through the works of art kept in the sacral buildings of the Makarska Littoral and whose authors are famous Croatian painters originating from this region. The Biokovo Mountain, a majestic gift of nature, emerges from the pearly sea.

Numerous pebble beaches of the attractive Makarska Riviera at the foot of Biokovo dazzle with their luxurious beauty. Like pearls on a necklace, the picturesque towns of Makarska, Baška Voda Tučepi, Brela, Gradac, Zaostrog, Živogošće, Podgora… make up the long coastal belt (50 km) of the Makarska Riviera. The contrast of the highest peak on the Mediterranean (1762 m) and the blueness of the sea leaves every visitor breathless. Steep, bare cliffs descend towards the sea, creating shade during the summer heat and offer an abundance of possibilities for fans of nature and sports. From the highest peak of the Sveti Jura (Saint George, 1758 m) Nature Park an excellent view opens up over the islands of Middle Dalmatia and, on the other side, over the karst  Dalmatian hinterland.
